Larchfield Estate Wedding Venue in Northern Ireland
Larchfield Estate Wedding Venue — A Photographer's Guide
We've been photographing weddings at Larchfield Estate for over a decade, and it still hasn't got old. It started life as something of a best-kept secret, back when hotel weddings were still the default. These days, it's widely regarded as one of the finest wedding venues in Northern Ireland. And honestly, the reputation is well earned.
If you're planning a wedding in Northern Ireland and Larchfield isn't on your shortlist yet, read on.
What kind of venue is Larchfield Estate?
Larchfield is an award-winning wedding venue built around a 19th century barn and stables, with walled gardens, cobbled courtyards, and that particular kind of charm that is gorgeous to photograph. It's the kind of place that manages to feel both elegant and completely relaxed. As wedding photographers, this is pretty much our ideal.
Where is Larchfield Estate?
The estate sits just outside Lisburn, on the road towards Ballynahinch. It's ten minutes from the M1, which puts Belfast city centre about 25 minutes away. For guests travelling from further afield, it's around 40 minutes from Belfast International, 30 minutes from Belfast City Airport, and an hour and a half from Dublin.
We've photographed ceremonies all over Northern Ireland where the reception was back at Larchfield. The location makes it genuinely easy to pull this off.
What is so good about Larchfield Estate Wedding venue?
Honestly, where do we start.
The gardens are the first thing we mention to any couple who asks. We've shot there in every season, and the walled gardens are gorgeous year-round. Just outside the walls, there's a private lake reserved exclusively for the couple on their wedding day. It's the perfect spot to slip away for five minutes, breathe, and get some genuinely lovely photographs.
The cobbled courtyards are wonderful for drinks receptions in the warmer months, and there's a real magic to them at night when the fire pits are lit. The barn itself is warm, high-ceilinged, and full of character with exposed wooden beams, and white stone walls. It’s a brilliant blank canvas that works just as well for a formal dinner as it does for a more relaxed, boho celebration.
The staff are great too. They're flexible, calm, and really know their stuff, which matters more than people realise when you're in the middle of wedding planning.
They also have alpacas and donkeys. While this is probably not a dealbreaker for you, there is no wedding that can’t be improved by the presence of alpacas and donkeys.
Ceremony options at Larchfield Estate
The main indoor ceremony space is the stables building, which is beautiful. There's also the orangery for smaller ceremonies, opening directly onto the courtyard.
If the weather is anything other than lashing, the sunken garden is the standout option. The sounds, the light, the smell of it in spring and summer are genuinely unreal.
We know Northern Ireland doesn't have a reputation for reliable weather, but we've done outdoor ceremonies here in every season, including winter, and we'd encourage you not to let the forecast put you off too quickly.
Where are the best photo locations at Larchfield estate?
Where do we start. If you’re thinking of getting married in Larchfield Estate, we’d strongly advise going for a walk around the gardens as it pretty much sells itself. We’ve mentioned the walled gardens before, but it’s worth reiterating just how gorgeous and well-maintained they are. There are loads of little nooks that change character throughout the seasons.
Just outside the walled gardens, there’s a wonderful lake which is for exclusive use by the couple, so the perfect place to sneak off to and have a quick breather. There are massive Rhubarb plants (at least that’s what we think they are) in the summer that are a stunning backdrop for photos.
We’ve been photographing weddings at Larchfield Estate for over a decade, and remain excited by the photo opportunities every time we visit.
Keeping it outdoors at Larchfield Estate
If the weather plays ball, Larchfield gives you the option to keep large parts of your day outside, which is where the estate really comes into its own.
The sunken garden handles the ceremony beautifully. After that, the cobbled courtyard takes over for drinks, lawn games, and that golden hour where guests are relaxed, the prosecco is flowing, and nobody wants to go inside yet. Speeches can happen out there too, which can make them less nerve-wracking for the speaker.
Cake cutting on the courtyard works brilliantly for photographs, with the old stone walls and red doors as a backdrop. And if you're after a first dance to remember, doing it outside as the sun goes down and the fire pits come on is genuinely special. Maybe even pass around a few sparklers to take the dark out of the evening.
As gorgeous as the barn is - and it is gorgeous - it's outside that Larchfield truly earns its reputation. The indoor spaces are there when you need them, but if the sky gives you half a chance, our advice is to take it.
What about rainy days?
Larchfield has this well figured out. There are indoor ceremony spaces, covered canopy areas for drinks receptions, and the courtyard is only a short dash from the main rooms. Staff are always on hand with umbrellas.
For couple photos on a wet day, you actually have more options here than at a lot of venues. The glasshouse is beautiful - sheltered but full of light. There are covered nooks around the stables, and if you're up for a walk with an umbrella, the gardens still deliver. In all our years photographing there, we've never left Larchfield without great photos, whatever the sky was doing.
Evening reception and entertainment
The barn easily accommodates a full band. You can set up in the main reception room or in the annex beside it. Our preference is always to keep everything in the main barn, where the atmosphere builds naturally through the evening. On long summer nights, there's also the option of a first dance out in the courtyard as the sun goes down and the fires come on. It's genuinely as magical as it sounds.
Will our guests like it?
A wedding venue isn't just a backdrop for photographs, it's somewhere your guests are going to spend a full day, and you want them to have a brilliant time.
Larchfield delivers on this really well. The layout of the estate means there's always something to look at, somewhere to wander, and enough space that guests don't feel on top of each other. The courtyard in particular creates a natural gathering point where people just naturally congregate, chat, and relax without needing to be directed anywhere.
For the drinks reception, you can lay on some lawn games - giant Jenga, croquet, badmington, that kind of thing. From a photography point of view, we love this part of the day. People forget to pose, guests who don't know each other end up laughing together, and the whole thing has an energy that carries through into the evening. Some of our favourite candid shots from any venue come from lawn games at Larchfield.
For kids, the annex can double as a play area during the evening, which takes a lot of pressure off parents.
Food options
Larchfield estate work with award-winning caterers allowing you to find something that suits your tastes and budget. You can have anything from traditional courses to BBQs and platters. We’ve been lucky enough to have many meals at Larchfield, and are always impressed by the food and service.
The wonderful thing about Larchfield Estate is that the venue suits both formal dinners and BBQs with sharing platters - neither option will feel out of place in the big barn.
Does Larchfield Estate have accommodation?
Yes! At time of writing the can host up to 37 guests in their cute courtyard cottages. You can also get ready there, which is really handy and removes a lot of wedding stress. The gate lodge is super cute for getting ready photos.
