Titanic Hotel Belfast Wedding Venue
Titanic Hotel Belfast Wedding Venue — A Photographer's Guide
Most wedding venues have a story. The Titanic Hotel Belfast has one of the greatest stories ever told, and it's written into every wall, every corridor, and every skylight of the building.
This is not just a hotel in Titanic Quarter, it’s the literal former headquarters of Harland & Wolff, the shipyard where the Titanic was designed and built. The men who planned that ship worked in these drawing offices. The rooms where you'll say your vows and eat your wedding dinner are the same rooms where some of the most ambitious engineering in human history was conceived. This venue is steeped in history.
For couples who want a wedding venue with genuine, irreplaceable character, and a setting that their guests will genuinely never forget, Titanic Hotel Belfast is hard to match anywhere in Ireland. Read on to find out why this place is a wedding photographer’s dream.
What kind of venue is Titanic Hotel Belfast?
The hotel occupies the beautifully restored Grade B+ listed Harland & Wolff Drawing Offices on Queen's Road in Belfast's Titanic Quarter. This means that while it has been modernised and restored, much of the old architecture and features have been maintained.
The building dates from the early 1900s and was the administrative and design headquarters of one of the world's greatest shipbuilders. It sat vacant for over 25 years (we often used it as a scuzzy photo backdrop in our early days of shooting weddings) before a huge restoration effort brought it back to life as a boutique hotel in 2017.
As soon as you walk in, you’ll see that the restoration has been done with real care. Original tiles, restored plasterwork, period details throughout. Everywhere you look there are subtle and not so subtle reminders of what happened here. The office of Thomas Andrews, the ship's designer who went down with the Titanic, is in this building. Lord Pirrie's private office is here. The champagne and cocktail bar occupies the second drawing office. It just feels like a living and breathing monument to the history of Harland & Wolff and all that Titanic lore.
The hotel only takes one wedding per day, which means from the moment you arrive the whole team is focused entirely on you. The staff are excellent, especially Gail (below) who is like a de-facto bridesmaid during elopements where you might need a little help.
Where is Titanic Hotel Belfast?
Funnily enough, it sits in the heart of Belfast's Titanic Quarter, right beside the historic slipways where the Titanic was built and launched. It's about 10 minutes from Belfast city centre by car or taxi, a short walk from the waterfront, and well connected by public transport. Belfast City Airport is around 15 minutes away, Belfast International around 40. It’s pretty much the handiest location in the City for a wedding.
For guests coming from further afield, the Titanic Quarter is one of the most visited parts of Belfast, so nobody will struggle to find it. The area has transformed dramatically in recent years and the whole quarter is vibrant and ever changing.
What are the ceremony and reception spaces?
Drawing Office One is the main reception suite, housed in one of the original drawing offices where the Titanic was planned. To describe it as breathtaking is an understatement. It is hands down our favourite ceremony and reception room in Northern Ireland. It’s not even a fair fight as it’s got so much going for it. The architecture is extraordinary: soaring ceilings, overhead skylights flooding the room with natural light… it’s a genuine privilege to photograph in any weather. It accommodates up to 220 guests for a ceremony or reception and is fully licensed for civil ceremonies. At night, the bar licence runs until 1am, with hotel guests able to continue in Drawing Office Two until 3am.
For smaller weddings and elopements, the Heritage Rooms are exceptional. There are five of them across the ground floor, each with their own character and history. The famous yellow H&W cranes are visible from these rooms too.
The champagne and cocktail bars adjacent to the Drawing Rooms are the natural home for pre-dinner drinks. They lead out onto the slipway with fantastic views of the Titanic museum and the docks. On a sunny day, your guests will be able to take in all the sights and sounds of the city while sipping cocktails.
Where are the best photo locations at Titanic Hotel Belfast?
Inside the hotel, you could spend an entire day finding new angles. Drawing Office One under the skylights. The Heritage Room corridors. The architectural details of the building itself photograph beautifully and give you images that look like nowhere else.
Step outside and the setting becomes even more remarkable. The hotel sits directly between two of the most visually striking landmarks in Belfast. To the east, we have Samson and Goliath, the iconic yellow Harland & Wolff cranes that dominate Belfast's skyline. They are among the most recognisable structures in Ireland. To the west, we have the Titanic Belfast visitor centre: a shimmering, aluminium-clad building shaped like a ship's prow. It’s the same height as the Titanic's hull, with the original slipways stretching out in front of it. It’s such a fascinating building and we love using it as a photo backdrop.
The slipways themselves are worth mentioning. This is where Titanic was built and launched. The sense of scale is jaw-dropping and it’s definitely worth heading out here for some pictures.
Sadly, in a fit of horrendous cultural vandalism, somebody decided it would be a good idea to build a massive apartment block in front of the Titanic Museum, so we no longer get a beautiful view of the Belfast skyline that we liked to use for sunset portraits. It’s an awful shame, but we were spoilt for choice anyway, so there is more than enough other options.
If you’ve got the time, we can jump in a car or taxi and take a short trip into the City and grab some shots of your favourite Belfast landmarks and locations. Though, with everything on offer at Titanic Quarter, you probably won’t want to leave!
What's the food like at Titanic Hotel Belfast?
The culinary team at the hotel focuses on locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, and the wedding menus reflect genuine care and quality. All wedding packages include a three-course meal, and the kitchen has a strong reputation for delivering a high standard consistently.
The service is great too. Few venues match their incredible time-keeping. They have a well-drilled wedding team who make sure all your guests are looked after.
As photographers, while guests are seated in the drawing office one, we go off and grab some bar food in drawing office two. The food in the bar is always excellent and the setting is… well, like everywhere in the building, incredible.
Will our guests like it?
Most guests will arrive at the Titanic Hotel Belfast expecting to be impressed and we’re certain they’ll still manage to be surprised by quite how impressive it actually is.
You could chat about the history alone all day. From the moment guests walk through the doors and start to take in the building, there's a sense of occasion that a purpose-built hotel banqueting suite simply can't generate. The Heritage Rooms invite exploration. The architecture demands attention. Every corner of the place has a story.
There are over a hundred rooms for any guests staying overnight. They’ll get to wake up in a room with a view of either Samson and Goliath or the Titanic Belfast slipways, which is an experience in itself. The whole quarter is worth exploring, and guests who extend their stay to take in the visitor centre, the SS Nomadic, or even a Belfast city centre evening will feel like the trip was well worth making.
What if it rains?
As wedding photographers in Northern Ireland, we often stress about weather. The Titanic Hotel is the one place where we don’t stress. It’s genuinely one of the most weather-resilient options in the whole country. The ceremony, the drinks reception, the dinner and the dancing all happen inside a building that is spectacular regardless of what the sky is doing outside.
For portrait photography, we have found the interior of the hotel to be more than sufficient on a wet day. The variety of spaces, light sources, and architectural features gives us everything we need without stepping outside.
That said, even on a grey day an overcast sky behind the Titanic Belfast visitor centre or under the cranes can produce a more cinematic image than a bright sunny one. And on a rainy summer day, you can see the most spectacular rainbows over the docks. We'd always try to get outside for at least a short portrait session, whatever the weather.
Evening reception and entertainment
A wedding band hasn’t been invented that couldn’t fit in Drawing Office One and the acoustics are excellent for a room of that height and scale. The band can also set up during the meal allowing for a seamless transition into the evening entertainment. Any evening guests arriving will be welcomed into the Cocktail bar which is like a mini version of Drawing Room Two.
We probably don’t need to repeat how majestic a backdrop Drawing Office One is for a first dance. Make sure to gather all your guests around you and even the most awkward shuffling couple will look like they belong on Strictly.
Hotel guests can continue into the residents bar in Drawing Office Two after the main event ends, which means the celebration doesn't have to stop!
Accommodation at Titanic Hotel Belfast
With over 100 rooms, the hotel can accommodate a significant proportion of your wedding party on site. Every room looks out on one of two views: Samson and Goliath to the east, or Titanic Belfast and the slipways to the west. There are no bad views at Titanic Hotel. The suites are exceptional, and the penthouse is one of the most remarkable places to spend a wedding night in Belfast.
Getting-ready photographs in the hotel rooms and corridors are always beautiful, so we’d highly recommend staying over the night before and having your whole wedding here.
Elopements at Titanic Hotel Belfast
The Titanic Hotel is one of our favourite Belfast venues for an elopement. The hotel can arrange everything you need for an intimate celebration - a civil ceremony, accommodation, and a private meal for two - which means you can have a genuinely complete and luxurious day without the logistics of a larger wedding.
From a photography point of view, eloping at the Titanic Hotel is a dream. With just the two of you, we have the freedom to move through the building at our own pace. We can explore the Drawing Offices, the Heritage Rooms, the original architectural details, and then head outside to the slipways, the cranes, and the Titanic Belfast visitor centre without any time pressure.
Some of our favourite couple portraits from anywhere in Belfast have come from elopement sessions in the Titanic Quarter, where the scale of the surroundings and the absence of a schedule produces something completely relaxed and stunning.
If you're thinking about eloping in Belfast and want a venue that gives you history, luxury, and one of the great urban backdrops in Ireland, the Titanic Hotel should be at the top of your list. Get in touch and we can talk through how the day could look.
