Weddings at the Ulster Museum
Ulster Museum Wedding Venue — A Photographer's Guide
When couples tell us they're getting married at the Ulster Museum, we know straight away that they're our kind of people. This isn't a default choice. Nobody books the Ulster Museum because it was the first venue they looked at or because it was the easiest option. They book it because they want something genuinely different, and that's exactly what they get.
Sitting on the edge of Botanic Gardens in the heart of Belfast’s University Quarter, the Ulster Museum is one of the most architecturally striking buildings in the city. If you're planning a Belfast wedding and you want a venue with real character, read on.
What kind of venue is the Ulster Museum?
The Ulster Museum is part of National Museums NI and is one of Ireland's leading museums of art, history and natural science. Even outside of weddings, we visit there several times a year for their amazing exhibits. Next to City Hall, it’s the most popular venue for wedding and elopement ceremonies in Belfast.
As a wedding venue it operates very differently from a standard wedding venue - you have exclusive use of the spaces from 5pm, the catering is handled by their hospitality partner Craft Event Co., and you're surrounded by some of the most significant pieces from the national collection while your guests are on the dance floor.
It's a blank canvas in the best possible sense. You don’t actually need to add anything - the architecture and the surroundings do the heavy lifting, and couples bring their own personality to fill it.
But the jewel in its crown is that it’s sitting on the edge of Belfast’s Botanic Gardens, giving you an unbeatable backdrop for your wedding photos.
Where is the Ulster Museum?
The museum is located on Botanic Avenue in Belfast's university quarter, right beside Botanic Gardens and a short walk from Queen's University. This is our favourite part of Belfast for it’s architecture and relaxed vibe. If you went to Queens University, you’ll be filled with nostalgia.
It's really easy to reach by public transport and well placed for guests staying anywhere in Belfast city centre. There are places to stay a short walk from the venue. Belfast City Airport is around 20 minutes away, Belfast International around 40.
What are the ceremony spaces at the Ulster Museum?
Ceremonies take place in the Belfast Room, a gorgeous light and airy gallery space. It has white walls, high ceilings, and its own private entrance hall so you can arrive away from the main public entrance. It's licensed for civil ceremonies and also works for religious and humanist ceremonies. It accommodates up to 100 people for a wedding ceremony.
For larger ceremonies, the Lecture Theatre is available for humanist or religious ceremonies of up to 160 guests.
The Belfast Room is one of our favourite ceremony spaces in Belfast. We’ve photographed dozens of civil, religious and humanist weddings and elopements here and it always delivers.
What is the reception space like?
The Atrium is the main location for receptions, and it is genuinely jaw-dropping. Soaring vaulted ceilings with wicker dragons hung above you. It holds up to 150 guests for a seated dinner with room for a further 50 evening guests for the dancing. There's plenty of space for a band or DJ and a proper dance floor, and the scale of the room means it never feels crowded even at full capacity.
If you’re having a small wedding of around 50 guests or less, you can have your dinner in the Belfast room where you said your vows. It’s cosy and classy for a dinner.
The museum is open to the public until 5pm which means dinner service is usually around 6pm or later. And the museum only takes one wedding per day, which means the whole team's attention is entirely on you.
Where are the best photo locations at the Ulster Museum?
Inside the museum, the options are extraordinary and completely unlike anything you'd find at a conventional venue. You could get lost for hours here. The gallery spaces are full of character, and depending on what's on display, you can find yourself shooting against some remarkable backdrops.
The Belfast Room itself, before and after the ceremony, is beautiful for family photos if the weather isn’t great.
If all that wasn’t enough, step outside and Botanic Gardens becomes your backdrop. It's one of Belfast's great green spaces, and the combination of the Palm House, the rose gardens, and the open lawns gives you a huge variety of portrait locations within a short walk of the venue. In spring and summer the gardens are stunning. In autumn the colours are extraordinary. They’re even beautiful in winter.
Queen's University is also within easy walking distance, and the Victorian architecture of the campus adds yet another option. We've walked couples there and back in twenty minutes and come away with some of our favourite images.
It’s worth noting, you need to seek permission to take photographs in both QUB grounds and Botanic Gardens, but this is usually pretty straightforward and the Museum can help guide you.
What's the food like at the Ulster Museum?
Craft Event Co. handle all the catering, and they do it well. The menu options range from formal sit-down dinners to sharing platters, grazing tables, banquets, and street food style suppers. This suits the venue perfectly, because the Ulster Museum works for both a very elegant wedding and a more relaxed, festival-style celebration.
The food has been consistently praised in reviews, with guests regularly commenting on both the quality and the generosity of what's served. And anything we’ve eaten there has been wonderful.
Will our guests like it?
They’ll love it. The reason is simple: there's something to look at and talk about everywhere. The collections, the architecture, the sheer unusualness of the setting - it creates an atmosphere and energy that a hotel can’t match.
The thing we love the most about Ulster Museum weddings is that you can factor in some explore time for the guests. Put aside 90mins after the initial drinks reception so that they can wander around the museum and see the art and exhibits. They’ll love it. During this time, you can get your photos out of the way so neither you nor they are missing anything.
It’s worth pointing out that the building is very accessible so you can rest assured that any guests with accessibility needs will be fully catered for and able to enjoy the venue to its fullest.
What if it rains?
This is one of the Ulster Museum's quiet advantages. Firstly, much of the day happens indoors - the ceremony and reception are inside. The interior of the building itself is spectactular, so a wet day doesn't diminish any of that.
Outside, Botanic gardens are directly adjacent, so you're not travelling far, and a short break in the weather is often all you need. For the more relentlessly wet days, we can stop into the Palm House for some gorgeous natural-light photographs.
For family photos when it’s raining, the Belfast room works perfectly with its neutral tones and gorgeous light. It’s also privately booked so members of the public can’t wander in.
In short, it's one of the most weather-resilient venues in Belfast.
Evening reception and entertainment
The Atrium handles a full band comfortably and the acoustics are excellent, which isn't something you can always say about a room that size. The dance floor area flows naturally from the dining space so the transition from dinner to dancing happens without much interruption.
The exclusive use arrangement from 5pm means that by the time the evening gets going, the building is entirely yours. There’s a certain buzz you get from feeling like you’re in a public space that’s closed to the public which feeds into the whole vibe.
Ceremony only at Ulster Museum
You don’t have to have your reception at the Ulster Museum. In fact, the majority of our couples use the museum for their ceremony and take photos in Botanic Gardens before heading on to a different reception venue. Usually, it’s a local restaurant like the nearby Deanes at Queens, or into the city to AM/PM, The Merchant, Cafe Parisien or The Muddlers club.
It’s also a wonderful space for a Belfast elopement ceremony. Unlike City Hall, you can have a religious or humanist elopement ceremony here, as well as a civil ceremony.
A Belfast wedding photographer's verdict
The Ulster Museum suits couples who know what they want and aren't interested in doing what everyone else is doing. It's a city venue, but has the space of a country estate. It's a public building, but on your wedding night it feels completely private. It's a museum, but it's one of the most alive and energetic wedding venues in Belfast.
From a photography point of view, it's endlessly rewarding. From the architecture to the gardens outside, we love shooting here, and we really seem to click with the couples who choose it.
